Q: It's great to have you here, Phyllis! Can you start by sharing a bit about your journey with Hawaiian Telcom?
Phyllis: My journey with Hawaiian Telcom has been
incredible. I started back in 1978 as an operator in Hilo and moved into sales in Kona in 1983. Over the years, I've transitioned through various roles, including corporate account management and senior sales management, eventually becoming the Director of Business Sales in January 2017. It's been a fulfilling career with a company that has grown from a telecommunications provider to a leader in technology here in Hawaii.
Q: Hawaiian Telcom has seen substantial growth over the years. How has the company evolved?
Phyllis: Hawaiian Telcom has significantly evolved from its early days. In 2023, we celebrated our 140th anniversary, which marked an incredible journey since King Kalakaua chartered us in 1883. We've invested over a billion dollars since 2010 to expand our fiber network, which helps bridge the digital divide and enhance digital equity across Hawaii. Our future-proof network provides high-speed, high-bandwidth services to meet the growing needs of our customers.
Q: Can you tell us more about the recent advancements in your fiber network and its impact?
Phyllis: Absolutely. We’ve been working diligently to expand our fiber infrastructure. As of August 5th, we announced that thanks to our fiber expansion, Fioptics+ TV service is available on all the neighbor islands, including Maui. Our fiber network provides faster, reliable internet service that is also a greener option as it uses less energy. Our fiber expansion is crucial for supporting businesses and residents, especially as remote work and virtual connectivity continue to be so important
Q: You've introduced a new brand for your fiber network—what's the story behind it?
Phyllis: Yes! We’ve branded our fiber network as Fioptics to highlight its speed and reliability. Fiber optics transmit data as light signals, offering faster speeds and greater reliability compared to traditional metallic cables. Our branding not only emphasizes advanced technology but also reflects our commitment to providing greener, energy-efficient solutions. You’ll see this branding on our fleet and throughout our marketing materials.
Q: What new services are available for customers, especially businesses, with this upgraded network?
Phyllis: With our upgraded network, we now offer a range of new services. Fioptics Business internet is hands down the best service. For businesses, we have introduced Secure Network, which is an enterprise-grade cybersecurity solution. This is essential as small and medium-sized businesses are often more vulnerable to cyber threats. Our solution includes comprehensive network protection and superior performance to ensure businesses can operate securely and efficiently. Additionally, our new Fioptics+ TV service combines live TV with streaming applications, giving residents more entertainment options.
Q: How is Hawaiian Telcom supporting the community, especially after recent events like the wildfires?
Phyllis: We are deeply committed to our community. Recently, we donated $17,000 to the Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center, a Maui-based nonprofit. We also contributed $3 million to the Hawaii Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund to support wildfire recovery efforts. Our employees actively participate in community service through our Malama Hours program, which provides every employee with 40 hours a year to volunteer. Many of our employees volunteer from their hearts. Coming up on September 20, we will have our annual “Day in the Community” when we ask all of our employees to come out and volunteer. We will be cleaning up Kaha Beach here on Maui to give back to our communities.
Q: How can businesses and individuals learn more about Hawaiian Telcom’s offerings?
Phyllis: Businesses and individuals can find detailed information about our services on our website, hawaiiantel.com, and through our social media channels. For personalized assistance, our business account executive Joseph Phillip who lives here on Maui can be reached at 808-242-5189 or via email at joseph.phillip@hawaiiantel.com. We’re here to help everyone understand how our technologies can benefit their specific needs and support their growth.
Q: Any final thoughts or additional information you'd like to share?
Phyllis: I just want to say how proud I am to be part of Hawaiian Telcom and to witness its growth and community impact. We’re dedicated to enhancing connectivity and supporting our local communities. Whether it’s through our fiber network, advanced security solutions, or community service, we’re here to make a positive difference. Thank you for having me. It’s always a pleasure to discuss our work and our commitment to Hawaii.
